WINE THAT STARTS FROM A HEIGHT AND AIMS EVEN HIGHER
From the 549 meters of altitude in Albugnano you can see the hills of the Monferrato Astigiano area and, in the distance, the Basilica of Superga and the western Alpine mountain range. We like to think that from here you can also see an interesting future.
WE START AGAIN AT 549
The first mentions of Albugnano wines date back to 1148. The stories of these wines, of the Vezzolano Abbey and the Savoy aristocracy over the centuries are weaved together like vines. In 1868, the sparkling Nebbiolo wine from Albugnano won an award at the Asti Expo. The recognition of DOC designation, published on the Gazzetta Ufficiale (the official journal of record of the Italian government) on 17 May 1997, marked the start of a new phase of growth for the Albugnano wine.
In 2017, growers from the area founded the ALBUGNANO 549 Association to support the oenological, historical, cultural, environmental and socioeconomic identity of the Albugnano DOC terroir. From the 549 meters of altitude in Albugnano you can see the hills of the Monferrato Astigiano area and, in the distance, the Basilica of Superga and the western Alpine mountain range. We like to think that from here you can also see an interesting future.
ALBUGNANO DOC
Albugnano DOC, as interpreted by the Association’s wine producers, is a wine obtained from pure Nebbiolo grapes and aged in wood for a minimun of 18 months and in a bottle for at least 6 months. This wine strives for the excellence of the great wines of the Piedmont, aiming to open a new promotional and sales window in the Italian and international markets.
The limited production of Albugnano covers just 44 hectares.
Gianpiero Gerbi, the Association’s oenologist, oversees the work of the members of the association and monitors the quality of the end product.

549. OUR NAME TELLS OUR STORY
549 is the altitude of the Municipality of Albugnano and, by happy coincidence, this number has a deeper meaning for us. It was on April 5 that 9 of us wine makers met to found the Association, and we come from 4 small municipalities where the Nebbiolo grapes for our DOC wine can be grown: Albugnano, Castelnuovo Don Bosco, Passerano Marmorito and Pino d’Asti. Today, there are more of us, and maybe our number will grow further, but not by much because our Albugnano DOC originates in just these four municipalities.
